RAGE! RAGE! RAGE! We’re letting off some steam over the things in games that make us mad. (Then we’re binge eating.) In the Hangover, we’re playing Splinter Cell Blacklist and Spec Ops: The Line. Also, your comments from Twitter on Viewer Mail, and the final weekly challenge in the Backlog Attack contest!

We’re officially past the halfway point! How are we doing?
Comments closedAre you a game collector or just a hoarder? This week, we’re talking about the nuances of video game collecting and how well we’ve been able to resist the allure of that shiny, new collector’s edition.
In the Hangover, we’re playing Steamworld Dig, Brothers: Two Sons of Mothers, Divekick, and D.J. rants a little about Shadows of the Damned‘s Big Boner.
We’ve also got highlights from the ongoing Backlog Attack contest, plus your Viewer Mail comments!
3 CommentsWe made more backlog progress this week: I started up Suda51/Shinji Mikami/Akira Yamaoka’s Shadows of the Damned and Paul ventured into the oft-overlookd Spec Ops:…
Comments closedOily men, oily, oily men! This week’s show is all about oily men (somehow). But then we talk about how Nintendo’s doing, so don’t worry.
The Backlog Attack is in full effect this week, as we play through Resident Evil: Revelations, Spec Ops: The Line and Shadows of the Damned
2 CommentsJust a quick update: We made some real progress last week. I finished Analogue: A Hate Story and Randy decided he’d had enough of The…
1 CommentIf you’ve been listening to the show for the last few weeks, you know we’ve been making an effort to finish a pile of our…
31 CommentsWe dig into the controversy surrounding Vanillaware’s Dragon’s Crown this week. How often do a developer’s creative decisions (and possibly, their personalities) detract from your gaming experience?
We also make some progress in the Summer Backlog Attack: Randy gets into, Mindjack, the second on his list of triple-F titles, and D.J. explains why Analogue: A Hate Story maybe shouldn’t have been on his list in the first place. Meanwhile, Paul tries out the gravity-bending co-op of Ibb and Obb.
As always, we feature your comments from Twitter in Viewer Mail! And listen carefully as we announce a new, backlog-themed contest that you won’t want to miss!
3 CommentsEven though we’re already three weeks into the Summer Backlog Attack, it just didn’t feel official without the big board. So here it is! As…
1 CommentWe continue our discussion on scalability of game experiences. In the Hangover, Randy talks about samurai warriors using iPads in Shin Megami Tensei IV, Paul has more Project X Zone musings and D.J. grinds beetles to dust in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
7 CommentsIt’s tougher than ever to fit lengthy gaming experiences into our crowded schedules. We discuss what we do when faced with the 60-odd-hour JRPG, whether it’s the developers that should be more considerate, and what’s truly important for us to get out of our precious gaming time.
In the Hangover, Randy selflessly throws himself on top of The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, D.J. saves the world many times in Half Minute Hero, and Paul… well, Paul’s still doing his Animal Crossing thing.
Also, we reveal the most shameful games in your backlogs in Viewer Mail!
Special thanks to listener DontJudgeMyADD for suggesting this week’s topic by way of his article, “Gamers need more choices to scale game experiences.”
7 CommentsThe Summer Backlog Attack returns for 2013! After being humbly defeated last year, we’ve got our sights on six (or so) new games that we’re committing to finish before the Fall releases (and Grand Theft Auto V) hit. Tune in to find out which neglected classics (and which questionable bargain bin finds) we’re finally going to play.
In the Hangover, Paul indulges in the craziness of Project X Zone, Randy plays Tetris on a touchscreen, and D.J. leads a tour of the 3DS’s revamped Mii Plaza and its four new games… which you might actually want to pay for!
We’ve also got your most anticipated Fall games in Viewer Mail!
7 CommentsThere’s still some life left in those old consoles! We’re looking into the back half of 2013 for the current-gen games we most want to play this year (besides Grand Theft Auto V, of course), including Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Pikmin 3, Pokemon X and Y, and (finally) the new Phoenix Wright game.
In the Hangover this week, we’ve got our spoiler-free review of the new Walking Dead episode, 400 Days, and impressions of the Final Fantasy XIV beta.
As always, we’ve got your postcards and letters in Viewer Mail and we wrap things up with our weekly non-sequiturs in Last Call.
15 CommentsWe’re playing The Last of Us (still spoiler-free!) and wondering if sometimes games try too hard to be… game-y? We discuss finding a proper mix of gameplay and narrative as games become more cinematic. Also, Randy spends his summer vacation memory hacking and punching dudes in Remember Me‘s Neo Paris.
We’ve also got your comments on retro games, Illumiroom, and more Animal Crossing!
3 CommentsAre you a closet gamer? (It’s OK, you’re among friends.) In a special combo topic from listener Robop1g, we’re picking apart the concept of “gamer shame” and seeing how far we have to turn the clock back before games become unplayable. And—as long as we’re coming out of the closet—we go on a bit of a tangent and confess our biggest movie shames.
In the Hangover, we’re playing Mighty Switch Force! 2 on 3DS and experiencing different types of zombie survival in State of Decay and The Last of Us. (Don’t worry, no spoilers!) We’ve also got your reactions to Microsoft’s surprise Xbox 180!
3 CommentsWe took a break from playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf long enough to record a show! We spend this week trying to pin down what makes Nintendo’s offbeat life simulator so popular, sharing stories from our Animal Crossing history, and discussing where the series could go in the future.
Also, we have your post-E3 reactions to Xbox One vs. PlayStation 4!
5 CommentsOn this week’s show: E3! We recap some of our favorite highlights and lowlights from the first two days of E3 2013. Yup, just straight up E3 reactions from the VGH Crew!
1 CommentVGH levels up to three digits! To celebrate, listener Anthony Ferro joins us to talk Virtual Boy, motion controls, Darth Vader, and other gaming gimmicks.
In the Hangover, we’re threatening violence over Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, not feeling the rush of the recent StarCraft II expansion, Heart of the Swarm, and are thoroughly satiated by Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack. We’ve also got hype-galore and game music bands in Last Call.
Whether you’ve been here since the beginning or are just joining us, thanks for your support over these 100 episodes! We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our incredible audience!
Comments closedWhile we prepare for our 100th show, D.J. reviews two more of those wacky Guild01 games for the 3DS. This time, it’s Suda51’s Liberation Maiden and Yoot Saito’s Aero Porter. Tune in if you want to hear about Japan’s latest robot invasion and learn about the exciting world of… baggage sorting?
Comments closedWhen Insomniac Games first unveiled Overstrike at E3 2011, its CG trailer showed a lot of potential. The campy humor and exaggerated action seemed decidedly Insomniac-esque and certainly piqued my interest at the time. Over the course of production, its creators took the game in a slightly more mature direction — a decision which was met with some degree of backlash. The end result of this evolution in design, Fuse, is a highly-polished, if somewhat derivative, third-person shooter that takes itself more seriously than Overstrike probably ever did while still retaining some of the trademark charm and humor originally hinted at.
