VGH #108: Gunwheel

VGH #108: Gunwheel

We dig into the controversy surrounding Vanillaware’s Dragon’s Crown this week. How often do a developer’s creative decisions (and possibly, their personalities) detract from your gaming experience?

We also make some progress in the Summer Backlog Attack: Randy gets into, Mindjack, the second on his list of triple-F titles, and D.J. explains why Analogue: A Hate Story maybe shouldn’t have been on his list in the first place. Meanwhile, Paul tries out the gravity-bending co-op of Ibb and Obb.

As always, we feature your comments from Twitter in Viewer Mail! And listen carefully as we announce a new, backlog-themed contest that you won’t want to miss!

I think you’ve put too much emphasis on the controversy in Dragon’s Crown, and not looking at the fact that all the characters are stylized in a way. (ie. The Dwarf is all muscle and mostly naked, the Amazon, while in a bikini, is all muscle as well)
It’s something I think the internet as a whole is ignoring and just focusing on the sexualized nature of a few of the characters.
That’s not to say that I don’t disagree that women should be portrayed in a different way in this industry, but I think getting the whole picture of this issue is important.

That’s actually a really good point, we may have to touch on that in the next show!

That’s a completely fair observation. Having not played the game, we were mostly trying to focus on the reviews and media response to the game. Listening back on the episode now, I think that may have been lost in my bloviating!
