Did we mention that the multiplayer component of Uncharted 3 is free-to-play through level 15? Check the FAQ on Naughty Dog’s site for some more details.

Here are a few notes from Matt, our tech guru, about this:

About a year ago, Sony and Naughty Dog released a free-to-play version of Uncharted 3’s multiplayer mode, making the main competitive experience available for free to everybody who owns a PS3. This free version includes all the competitive maps and modes that shipped on the original Uncharted 3 disc and allows players to level up to rank 15, free of charge. All single-player content, co-op content, split-screen mode, and a bunch of skins and customization options are available for purchase. If you already own the Uncharted 3 disc or already have the full game installed digitally, you’re probably already good to go, though you may want to check for patches.

The download for the free-to-play multiplayer-only portion of Uncharted 3 measures 4.7 GB in size, which means you’ll need around 9.5 GB of free space on your PS3’s hard drive. Furthermore, you’ll probably want to plan ahead so that you can get everything installed and patched before our game night.

In addition to the base free-to-play game, there are also three map pack add-ons available for free. We’ve provided links to the multiplayer portion of the game and the map packs below. Taken together, the three maps total around 1.5 GB. I don’t know if we’ll use the extra maps, but since they’re free, it’s probably a good idea to install them. You can download them from the in-game Store menu, locate them manually in the add-ons section of the PS Store, or use the links below.

NOTE: The first time you launch the free-to-play Uncharted 3 multiplayer, you will be prompted to download a ~530 MB patch. However, if you accept the patch, the game may crash and reboot your PS3. To avoid this issue, decline the patch when it initially prompts you, allow the game to finish loading, then initiate the patch download by trying to access the multiplayer from the in-game menu (which triggers a PSN sign-in). This crash only occurred on one of my two PS3s, so I’m not real sure what the cause is. Just thought I’d mention it in case it happens to you.
